Cléo N.o4

Acrylic on Papyrus

60 x 65 x 8 cm

Number four in a series of contemporary twists on a classic mode of pop-culture, the celebrity portrait. In this case, a double-dose of celebrity - Elizabeth Taylor’s 1963 Hollywood portrayal of Cleopatra VII Philopator. Each version in the series is augmented with varying touches of decoration, leading us to wonder whether it’s Cleopatra or Taylor that is wearing the new accoutrements and fashions. Cléo No.4 features a vibrant yellow palette with pink and grey details throughout. Hand drawn pyramids and ankh hieroglyphs add an ancient twist to the composition.
